Car has idling issues. mechanic says its Variable timing solenoid?

I'm on the second mechanic for this issue, looking for some help.
My 02 RSX S will start, idle for a bit then turn shut down. The first mechanic replaced the gas pump, but the problem still persisted. He tried to solve it, but then gave and said it was not a mechanical problem, but rather an electrical issue. I took it to the guy across the street, he now says it's the camshaft position sensor, but he left town and one of the technicians at the same place said it's the variable timing solenoid. He went to the local parts store, and they said they only sell it at the dealership.

My question is, have any of you have had idling issues before and how did you resolve it. 2. What does the variable timing solenoid do?
First post here, hope I'm not too annoying.
