I have a 2002 rsx type-s with around 240000kms. had a p0420 about 1.5 years ago, so i went ahead and replaced the cat with a magnaflow and did both sensors at the same time.
Within 2 months the engine light began blinking on the highway, then stayed on, and when i had the local guys scan it, sure enough p0420. so i've been driving it with an engine light on for a while (which really bugs me, i'm a fix it right away kind of guy) because they didn't seem to be able to figure it out. but now i'll be coming up for emissions again this year so now i really have to deal with it.
My first though was to start by cleaning and testing the harness once the weather clears up here (ontario canada) to make sure i'm getting reliable connections, but i wondered: it burns a decent amount of oil, say a litre every 6 or 8 fill-ups, could that be gunking up the sensors? i think i'm going to replace the pcv valve and see if that helps with the oil burning in the mean time. at this point i'm willing to try one of those 20 dollar pass your emissions test additives if it gets me passed for now.
i appreciate any suggestions you guys might have.
best,
-Eric
