Ive got a 04 type s with 205k miles on it, engine was professionally overhauled in a Honda machine shop around 175k kpro and a short ram intake was added. Car was professionally dyno'd and tuned at slowmotion motorsports in ohio. I'm now living in texas. So Ive only seen the car do this two or 3 times and it only happens after driving for several hours during rushhour, hottest part of the day and lots of stop and go traffic downtown dallas. when I have to come to a stop and inch along the highway in traffic my idle will gradually go from 750ish up to 1500, and up and up and up. few weeks ago I had to drive it downtown again to pick up my wife that had her car sideswiped. It started idling around 2000 when I had to stop, when traffic cleared up and I would start cruising again it would come back down at the next stop and be fine. on the way home from picking her up there was a accident on the highway and I was stuck in stop and go for about 25 minutes, my rpms gradually shot up to 4000 rpm before I could finally get over and park it on the median. this whole time the temp gauge hadn't moved at all but even the past 2 incidents that it got around 2000rpm idle it was obvious its getting a little hot. when I shut it down and set the ignition to on the temp gauge now actually reports the temperature and it was well around the 75% mark, after I popped the hood to let it cool off for about 40minutes and the accident cleared up I made it home fine, normal idling.
So heres whats been checked... Burped any air out of the radiator, checked the lines for flow, checked the fan switch, checked the belt and the pump. then I took the car to sears automotive and they did the same, hooked it up to a pressure test to see if there was any leaks or any air in the system.. they let it idle for over an hour with no issues, fans kicking on when needed.
I'm totally stuck here ive never once seen a car overheat and increase its rpms while doing so. also the evap canister purge solenoid is busted, the plastic bit the hose attaches too, I have it rigged on there with some adhesive and silocone but I doubt that would cause my car to idle like that.. only other thing I can think of is an issue with the kpro tune. I havent had access to a laptop but I plan on doing some datalogging when I get the car back from sears.
TLDR...
Has anyone here seen this issue? K20a2 kpro idling higher and higher, gradually getting worse, as you come to a stop and idle out of gear when running a long time in bad traffic/high temps?
